Budi Asih (b. 1983 Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia)

Born in Yogyakarta, Budi Asih is an artist who specializes in ballpoint pen and coloured pencils on paper. She grew up in Sidikan, a small culturally rich village in Yogyakarta. Asih attended the Visual Art Faculty at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta, majoring in Painting from 2002, and completed her studies in 2009. According to her, Yogyakarta is a city that gives meaning to her life.

Art education has become an integral part of Asih’s life journey after college. The tough economic condition has enabled her to be more resourceful in seeking various possibilities and strategies to continue working as an artist. She would often blend a variety of mediums such as acrylic, pen, chinese ink and coloured pencils in her works.

Drawing inspiration from her daily life, Asih portrays her imagination through a plethora of colours with intricate depictions, luring viewers into her labyrinthine journey. She believes that behind each of her life events unfolding, they must be part of something bigger planned by God Almighty. This is what she feels that is giving boost and spirit in her life, especially in the Arts.

Asih hopes to elaborate on her experiences on the perception of reality (Goodness, Badness, Sadness, and Happiness) as a fact that they do “exist”. Through her works, she seeks to tell engaging stories that could be enjoyed in each and every detail. Over the years, Asih has garnered herself several awards, including her most recent achievement, a Silver Award in the UOB Indonesia Painting of the Year 2014 competition.
