To commemorate the momentous occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM), the Arch-volution Exhibition and Book (Evolution of Malaysian Architecture) were officially launched at the prestigious PAM Centre on 15 July 2023. The President of PAM, AR Abu Zarim Abu Bakar, led the unveiling ceremony in a grand event.
The Arch-volution Book, expertly curated by acclaimed architect Ar Lim Teng Ngiom, presents an extraordinary exploration of the evolution of Malaysian architecture throughout the past century. Collaborating with 21 esteemed authors, Ar Lim Teng Ngiom takes readers on a captivating journey through the rich architectural heritage of Malaysia.
In addition to the comprehensive book, an awe-inspiring exhibition has been meticulously arranged at the PAM Centre. From 15 July to 31 December 2023, visitors will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a visual feast of architectural masterpieces, showcasing the transformative story of Malaysian architecture.
To elevate this momentous occasion further, three distinguished speakers graced the launch event, sharing their profound insights and perspectives on Malaysian architecture. The first speaker, Ahmad Fuad Osman, a renowned artist provocateur, infused the celebration with his unique artistic approach. Known for posing thought-provoking questions on politics, life, and history, his presence added an element of artistic discourse to the event.
The second speaker, Ar Junn Ng, an esteemed architect and scholar specialising in old urban history and architecture, illuminated the significance of architectural developments in Malaysia. Her extensive research on shop houses and her biography on Chow Kit have established her as an authoritative figure in this field. Through her valuable expertise, Ar Junn Ng shed light on the historical importance of architectural transformation in Malaysia.
Last but not least, the third speaker, Lai Chee Kien, captivated the audience as the foremost authority on Malayan Independence architecture. Widely recognised for his research works, which have been extensively quoted, his presence added a profound historical context and depth to the discussion. Lai Chee Kien's contributions to architectural discourse are unparalleled, and his participation in the event elevated the celebration to new heights.
During the engaging Q&A session, the speakers interacted with the audience, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas and insights. This dialogue further enriched the conversation surrounding Malaysian architecture and its evolution over the past century.
